Arriving in Arequipa after a long bus ride from Cusco, I was ready to explore this city known for its stunning colonial architecture and surrounding natural beauty. With my camera in hand, I began my exploration of Arequipa, also known as the “White City” due to its beautiful white volcanic stone buildings. Arequipa is a perfect blend of culture, history, and outdoor adventures, offering everything from scenic hikes to charming markets and incredible food.
1. Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena
One of the must-visit sites in Arequipa is the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena. This enormous religious complex is essentially a city within a city, filled with narrow streets, beautiful plazas, and hidden corners. Once a place closed off to the outside world, the monastery opened to the public in the 1970s. It’s a peaceful escape with a rich history, and exploring the entire monastery will take a couple of hours. If you’re short on time, a guided tour is highly recommended.
Cost: 40 Soles
Location: Santa Catalina, two blocks from Plaza de Armas
2. Mirador de Yanahuara
For a stunning view of Arequipa and the surrounding volcanoes, take a 30-minute stroll to Mirador de Yanahuara. From here, you’ll get fantastic views framed by volcanic stone arches. It’s a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. If you’re up for more, continue on to the next mirador for even more panoramic views.
Location: 30-minute walk from Plaza de Armas
3. Mirador Carmen Alto Chilina
Another great viewpoint in Arequipa is Mirador Carmen Alto Chilina, which is about 30 minutes from town. The entrance is inexpensive, and you’ll be treated to a beautiful view of the valley and the nearby mountains. You can either walk back to town or take a short taxi ride to return.

4. Mundo Alpaca: Spend Time with Alpacas
If you’re a fan of animals, visiting Mundo Alpaca should be on your list. Here, you can interact with alpacas and learn about the wool production process of not just alpacas, but also llamas and vicuñas. It’s a fun and informative experience, and best of all, it’s free! You’ll even have the chance to feed the alpacas their favorite treats.

5. Plaza de Armas and the Basilica Cathedral
The Plaza de Armas is the heart of Arequipa, surrounded by beautiful colonial buildings and vibrant street life. The Basilica Cathedral, located here, is a must-see. You can enter the cathedral for free for a couple of hours each day, though be sure to cover your shoulders and legs if you’re wearing shorts or a tank top. Afterward, you can head up to the rooftop for stunning views of the square and the surrounding city.
6. Colca Canyon Trekking
If you’re up for a challenge, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Hiking here offers breathtaking views, and you can choose to go with a guide or venture out on your own. Be sure to pack sunscreen, as the sun can be intense. Whether you’re exploring the valley or spotting the famous Andean condors, the Colca Canyon will leave you in awe.
Location: Day trip from Arequipa
7. Hike Misti Volcano
For the adventurous, Misti Volcano is a popular challenge. Standing at over 5,800 meters, this active volcano offers a two-day trek that includes camping on the mountain. However, due to the altitude and difficulty, it’s recommended for experienced hikers only. Acclimatization to the high altitude is crucial for this hike.
8. Wander the Markets of Arequipa
Exploring the Mercado San Camilo is a treat for the senses. From exotic fruits to fresh juices, meats, and local ingredients, the market is a great place to dive into the local food culture. The variety of products available makes it an exciting stop, especially if you’re looking to cook for yourself while in town.
Location: Calle San Camilo
9. Ruta de Sillar
If you have a bit more time, consider visiting Ruta de Sillar, located about 40 minutes outside of Arequipa. This site, not yet overrun by tourists, offers a chance to see the quarries where sillar (volcanic stone) was extracted to build the city. It’s a fascinating and less crowded destination that’s worth exploring.
10. Claustros de la Compañía
Wandering through the Claustros de la Compañía is a must if you’re exploring the town. Now home to shops, cafes, and restaurants, the beautiful stone architecture of the building offers a peaceful retreat. The rooftop is a great place to enjoy a drink while taking in the view of the city.
11. Just Walk Around with a Camera
One of the best ways to enjoy Arequipa is simply by walking around. From the stunning Casa Tristan del Pozo (an art gallery) to the charming Fundo El Fierro market, Arequipa is full of picturesque locations that are perfect for photography. The beautiful colonial architecture, combined with views of the surrounding volcanoes, provides countless opportunities for stunning photos.
12. Coffee Time at Mi Kcao
For a relaxing break, head to Mi Kcao, a cozy coffee shop where you can enjoy a delicious latte or rich organic hot chocolate. The friendly service adds a personal touch to the experience, and they even offer blankets to keep you warm on chilly afternoons.
Where to Stay in Arequipa
Arequipa offers a variety of accommodation options, depending on your preferences. For a comfortable and affordable stay, Limbo Jump Hostel is a great choice, offering clean dorms with lockers and a fully equipped kitchen. If you’re looking for something a bit more lively, Wild Rover is popular for its party atmosphere. For those seeking a more private and tranquil stay, La Puerta del Sol in the historic center offers a budget-friendly option just minutes from the main attractions.
Where to Eat in Arequipa
If you’re in the mood for a burger, AQP Burger is the place to go for some of the best burgers in town. For a healthier option, try El Buda Profano, which serves amazing vegan and sushi dishes. The food scene in Arequipa is diverse and caters to all tastes.
Getting to Arequipa
Getting to Arequipa is easy with multiple travel options. I took an overnight bus from Cusco with Cruz del Sur, which was both safe and convenient. If you’re short on time, flights are available from Lima, and flights from El Calafate to Arequipa are also an option.
Arequipa is a city that will capture your heart with its stunning surroundings, rich culture, and delicious food. Whether you’re hiking through the mountains, wandering around the markets, or simply relaxing with an alpaca, this city has something for everyone.
